Richard's cameras accompany him and capture those moments and now share them with you.Richard Brownhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13311856161860362783noreply@blogger.comBlogger34125tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1877843476048944766.post-11406318568545726072020-02-23T13:38:00.000-07:002020-02-23T13:38:31.192-07:00The long lost Richard..... with apologies.Just a quick Tuesday night post..... after 3 and a half years. I am alive and well and getting back into the writing thing. Still doing photography but that has changed as well. In early 2017 I got a little sidelined when my old dog Maverick became ill with degenerative mylinopathy which is a canine form of ALS. He was getting closer to 16 when he died a few months later. A tough time. A lot of energy caring for the old guy, carrying him up and down three stories and watching him decline. The old question: when do you pull the plug? My choice, educated but painful.

The Miata sports car is gone; Maverick is gone; professional wedding photography for the most part is also gone. Without going on a rant, there are a zillion kids with clicks...... the greater Calgary area has over 3,000 folks claiming to be pros according to one of the biggest camera stores. Weekend warriors, mamarazzis and while there are a few truly excellent newcomers, the majority have little knowledge and less ability. But cute websites/facebook/instagram and saccharine sweet words alongside the few images (sometimes stolen).

All that aside, I still accept a limited number of smaller weddings for 2020. I am not looking for 12 hour events but rather 3 to 4 hour events. I want to give my clients great service, a great experience and a lot of excellent, high quality images which they can have printed at recommended providers.
Now for the disclaimer..... the wife of a fellow, older and experienced photographer said that I wouldn't likely get any work because... the horror.... I am a senior!!!! Yes, it is shockingly true! I even get a little pension from the federal government! So if you want a professional wedding photographer with hundreds of wedding clients, the best gear and a fun, creative approach to personalize your wedding then contact me. Darcie did and I think she is very happy with the images from that day.
But the really cool thing in my life is that for the past two winters, I have spent 4-5 months hanging out with my Mexican amigos in Puerto Vallarta. Quiet little part of town and a lifestyle which is providing me with great food, exercise, a new language and new friends from a lovely country.
And i get to take photographs of my neighbours life events...... and then give them some 4x6 prints and the odd enlargement . Here is my friend from across the street.... Clemente is 92 years young and I have been welcomed by his 10 children, 41 grandchildren and 28 great grandchildren. A truly wonderful and eye-opening experience.
So stay tuned..... there are stories to tell..... Saturday night at the Church, the annual fiesta at Los Llanitos up in the mountains of the Sierra Madre, little Diego who is my 6 year old Spanish instructor. Now I just have to remember how to post this thing. Gracias Amigos.

It helps to have the beautiful Emerald Lake Lodge for your wedding venue. Always gorgeous and always professional , the staff and the location make for a memorable wedding.
This was funny as the owner of the venue came out to watch me shooting the Three Sisters with 3 sisters and said that in all of his 15 years, no photographer had ever taken clients 75 feet from his front door for this image. Hire a professional........
Two months later this wild and crazy rescue poodle found me. Now 8 years later and 40,000 more km, the car has been sold. It was a blast; everyone who loves cars should own one. My brother Joshua bought one a week after I sold mine. Maverick adored car surfing at high speeds around sharp corners but at 15 in October, it is harder for him to sit up and wave to his adoring fans. So one last spin up Mt Norquay and then it was gone.
Captured some great moments and then we semi-posed a few by the lake. There has always been something very special up there and I hope it will follow this couple for the rest of their lives.
VENDOR SPOTLIGHT - RICHARD BROWN PHOTOGRAPHY
"I work with the couple to produce images that reflect them, their lifestyle, their dreams and their love ."
1. How long has Richard Brown Photography been in operation?
I really started concentrating on wedding photography in 1991 although I had done quite a few weddings before that. It is my only job. I am a professional photographer.
2. What services do you offer?
I offer a full service of photographic options for my clients. My style is one of a classic, timeless approach with some guidance and a lot of relaxed photojournalistic-type candid images as well. I have been called humorous and whimsical in my creative approach and also put a lot of emphasis on family images on the wedding day. My clients can hire me for a full day or a shorter period of time; they can ask for some of the images to be captured on film as I still enjoy shooting film with medium and large format cameras; they can ask for help in planning the day as I know most of the local vendors and venues and can give excellent, informed advice.
3. What is the advantage of hiring an experienced wedding photographer?
As an experienced professional, I know how to deal with the issues or problems that may pop up from the emotional strain, the intense pressure and the desire to have a perfect wedding. With that experience comes the knowledge that your back up camera gear must have back up; if the flowers have a problem, you need to know the local florists; if the cake flops, you need to know the cake people; if the weather looks like a disaster, you arrange to do a shoot the next day as well. My clients come from all over the globe for their wedding here in the Rockies and a little blizzard or monsoon shouldn't keep them from getting photographs in the mountains. As a professional and a local, I know the cool, hidden gems for backdrops. I know that the dead end street has a beautiful little view down the valley if you walk 15 feet up the hill. I know the people at the venues and have worked with them many times.
4. What makes your services unique?
Two things… besides my knowledge and experience of a lifetime in photography. I am one of the only full time wedding photographers who shows their fine art photography in an art gallery. In fact, I am the gallery director for the Canmore Art Guild and have been a member most of my adult life. Doing the creative fine art aspect simply increases the creative flow. I spend my holidays travelling with a camera to France or Mexico or Tofino and every image that you create makes you a better photographer. And that is why my black and white images stand out.... I had a darkroom until 2014 and processed my own film. I understand film and that helps with the digital world.
The other unique aspect is that I have a degree in Psychology/Sociology and studied counselling at grad school. I also used to do massage therapy. So when the bride or her mother are having a little meltdown or Uncle Bob has had two many martinis, I am pretty good at defusing situations that can arise. And after doing hundreds of weddings, trust me, things can sometimes get a little sideways.
5. What advise do you have to future couples using your services?
Book early; chat lots; give information about your family such as any divorces, recent deaths. I had one groom whose dog had died the week before the wedding - the same day my dog died. The bride was comforting her fiancé and photographer but we sure got to know each other well and fast. And the photographs reflected that connection. Do make a list of family shots you want and inform those people… time/place/importance of being there and on time. Don't be afraid to suggest creative ideas as you are as much a part of the creative team as the photographer. The photos should reflect who you are; not what some frustrated "artist" thinks you should be.
6. How do you help a couples wedding day go smoother?
I know the area; I have friends that own great restaurants; I know the issues with some of the venues; I have seen the challenges. Ask my advice. I am not a "wedding planner" just a local who has lived here for thirty years. Planners are great but simply asking the locals can make a huge difference. And I love being a part of the event. Helping my clients bridges that gap of strangers, and we are all more relaxed when it comes time for pictures. Also, unless you are a professional model, you might need a little guidance from the photographer. Few of us are comfortable in front of a camera so I help get my clients relaxed and comfortable and enjoying the experience. One of the really important ways I help my clients is that I am local. I live in this community and know it well. So often I hear of self-proclaimed pros from Calgary and outside of town asking the limo driver, the officiant, the harpist etc as to where they can go to take photos. They don't necessarily know the area. Also, if something happens to me or my gear, I have a whole community of professionals within 10 minutes who are good friends and we all take care of each other. Yet I have had a Calgary pro call from a church because his one camera had died, and could he borrow one? Hire a local true professional.
7. What is your favourite photo shoot location in Canmore or Kananaskis?
There are many and like some other pros, we tend to keep it close to our chest. I am always looking at the light and looking for new spots with a different angle. I will say that Silvertip Resort is a great place for wedding photographs, there is even a little patch of fireweed which in August in the evening light is spectacular. In the fall, I have a few favourite trees that always provide great backdrops.
8. Any other information you’d like potential clients to know:
Just because someone says they are a professional, it doesn't mean it is true. Look at the images on their website: if it looks like they have only done 2 or 3 weddings that is likely the truth. Don't settle for "Good Enough" but don't pay a fortune to someone with little experience but a nice manner. You are not looking for a new best friend. You are looking for a professional who will help you through your wedding day while helping you create the powerful, beautiful images that will be your memories. Bubbly personality and out of focus, crooked snapshots does not work. And enjoy your wedding day.
Making photographs.... I never liked the expression "taking shots". It is all about a conscious decision to be open to whatever I see out there in this beautiful world. Sometimes, it is going back to the same spot and seeing different light on the same subjects.

It is about living a creative life.... and loving every minute of it. Here I was on the road to the Columbia Icefield and stopped to revisit a lovely spot I know.

At one wedding, I mentioned that I wanted to get some images of the bodice and accents on the wedding dress.... the bride said: "Bodice..... no guy knows that word!!!!" Well, when you have
four sisters and you have been a professional photographer for 20 years, yes you can be a guy and know "bodice" and how important that dress is to the bride. And as a man, I can appreciate how incredibly beautiful a woman is on her wedding day. I have seen big men reduced to tears when they see that wild cowgirl with make-up, gorgeous hair and a dress that literally stops their hearts.
Yet I have seen so many of the new gang of self-proclaimed "pros" posting wedding snapshots of a
stunning bride but her dress is a white blob with no detail. She has spent huge amounts of time picking the perfect dress which has often cost the same as a good used car and the so-called pro has given them
an over-exposed image with no detail. That is what is called a mistake, an error and what you often get with the latest trends in wedding photography. My goal is to get classic, timeless beautiful images
along with lots of fun, creative and whimsical shots. There is a difference.Richard Brownhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13311856161860362783noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1877843476048944766.post-47492197357983893612015-03-17T21:57:00.001-06:002015-03-17T21:57:45.779-06:00Those quiet moments........ Weddings can be so intense and crazy..... everyone wants to make your day so special and to show their love and caring. And sometimes it can be a bit much. So make sure you have a photographer who can foresee the family challenges, the feeling of being overwhelmed, little bits of fear and doubt and all the things that make us human. I have a degree in psychology and counseling experience; granted it was in a prison setting when I was doing grad school placements but wow, I learned a lot and fast. So weddings and crazy parents and over zealous MOBs are a piece of cake compared to Bubba.

During this wedding, I took the couple to a quiet part of the hotel with some soft lighting and asked them to tell each other what the day meant for them...... quietly and just between themselves. I have no idea what was said but the love and the heat was there. They will do fantastically well as a couple. Of that, I have no doubt.

And I had the privilege to photograph their wedding.
One never hits 100% but at
this Canmore wedding, I wanted to get a shot of the father of the brides great cufflinks and just as I set up for this shot, the bride swept in for a big hug from Dad. I have to tell you that sometimes it is hard
to focus and compose the shot when I am getting misty-eyed myself. This lovely young bride was very blessed to have such strong love and support from a great father.
Ah yes, the fabulous "selfie". I intend to make this part of every wedding and that way when they get the "real" photographs, they might know what the difference is. Cell phones are great but only to a certain point.
This time was special as the flower girl was the daughter of the bride and groom at a Silvertip wedding in Canmore. Not yet two years old and so much a part of this special day.... charging down the aisle and then getting bored with all the adult talking. Hey, what is that over there in the gazebo.... let's check it out. That big beautiful harp and the pretty lady in the bright dress.... hmmm. Hard to concentrate on the ceremony photos AND get some shots of the little angel.
I started doing black and white film a long time ago..... in my late teens. Sold my darkroom in 2014 yet still shoot it sometimes and get a friend to process it. But nowadays, NIK software and digital Nikons produce some pretty amazing images. Yet I think a lifetime of shooting black and white film, knowing filters, long hours in the darkroom tweaking those images.... well, it gives you an advantage in seeing what is a great black and white image. And how to make it happen.
All is not what it seems. I just saw a Facebook ad for family portraits.... 45 minutes/2 photographers/ 60 digital edited images all for only $500. At least that is better than the one 3 years ago.... $20 for 20 minutes !

Shades of lining up at Sears or Walmart and standing in front of that colourful backdrop. The reality is that to be a portrait photographer you have to know your subject which (a) takes time and (b) takes experience. Not everyone can quickly relate well with everyone in the group from granny to the kids and then to the grandchildren..... I try to get to know them a little over the phone but basically you are a stranger parachuting into a family or dealing one to one with someone who has their own fears and/or issues with the camera. It isn't just about having a good camera or a little experience with that black box.... it is all about making a connection. Whether your subject is a little child or a lovely slightly older woman. The first group of images are often tossable.... you are establishing that rapport. So yes, you might end of spending much more time with that person or group.

Here is a portrait of a lovely woman who was making some big changes in her life and wanted to celebrate them. She wasn't looking for acres of out of focus grass in front of her or angled, "artistic" shots with weird colours. She wanted a portrait which showed her beauty and her soul... and those great eyes. I think she got what she was hoping to portray. And that is why they call it a portrait.

Even when you travel all the way from Minnesota with 20 family and friends and have your heart set on getting married at Quarry Lake here in Canmore. Then you find out that you have to book the venue ahead of time with the town and there is a wedding at 2pm...... so you dash up there at 4pm just as the other wedding leaves. Great ! Now if those clouds will just hold off but alas, it is not to be. These brave souls stood out there with horizontal rain and gusting winds.... umbrellas collapsing and huddling photographer. Good thing those Nikons are weather resistant and I carry a towel. And a good thing that Kara and Max and I did the photos before the ceremony when the sky was blue and the clouds were awesome..... so here are some images from that day.
